Hisla Bates is a Parsons School of Design 1981 graduate who majored in Fashion Design. She has a Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) degree from Parsons the New School and is an artist and illustrator who fell in love with printmaking after a hiatus from art. While working as a physician, art was not at the forefront of her life. That changed around 2006 when she started printmaking with a group of fine artists in Brookline, Massachusetts. Hisla has been in several juried shows and museum exhibitions for her monotypes. In 2011 she was in the prestigious Boston Printmakers Biennial with juror, Jim Dine an acclaimed pop artist and printmaker, who selected 149 prints in the show from over 2060 submissions. Three of the 149 prints selected that were in the show belonged to printmaker Hisla Bates. An article in the MetroWest Daily News stated, “Working in very different monotypes, Hisla Bates of Brookline creates both a crumbling and haunted house and a frankly sensual nude.”
Hisla uses oil paint on copper or Plexiglas plates the images are then transferred onto paper to create the prints seen here. They are all original prints unless noted otherwise. No two are exactly the same.
